This will sound like platitudes but it is not meant to be that way. The police are the thin blue line between civilization and Anarchy. As police come under fire both physically and politically that process will begin to break down. Crime is up, Murders are up, Lawlessness is up. The police have become afraid to do their job. The police also have to learn and be more attentive to process of arresting someone. Mr. Floyd, Mr. Blake, and Mr. Prude all had prior to arrest, the first two for felonies and being arrested for additional felonys. Mr. Prude had been taken to a hospital for mental problem but released. All had illegal drugs in their system. Is that process of restraints also require leg shakles? Politicians need to be held accountable also and the police need to point out that the Policies and Procedures manuels are approve by the politicians. I was never a police office but rather served 20 years in the Army as a Combat Arms officer.
Marshall knows that both my daughter and her boyfriend are cops. In a conversation back in February (before the BLM/Antifa hit the streets), her boyfriend said “we are the only thing standing between you and total chaos”. This, from an Iraqi veteran.
A lifelong Democrat, I have become disgusted with the Democrat party. I didn’t leave the party – the party left me. I do feel this is, indeed, one of the most important elections of my lifetime. I have friends who say if Trump wins, they’re leaving the country. My response to them? Please go somewhere I’d like to visit. But to myself I’m saying: You just do that and learn (the hard way) that America is the greatest country in the world.
I have a physical handicap and was almost bullied everyday as a kid. There were 2 times a Chicago Cop on his tri-cycle motorcycle prevented me from getting a severe beating and helped me get home. So I always admired and liked police.
I also had policemen as next door neightbor twice in my life. The condo I live in has retired police and I trust them with my life. That being said todays police are not the police of my youth. It hard to pick up a paper and not read about a cop somewhere doing something illegal, immoral or just plain stupid. It shamefull at a news briefing
the most obese people on the stage are wearing a uniform. It’s a profession where being in shape should matter. I was told by my father keep your mouth shut ,because a cop could kill you and there is nothing he could do. It’s even worst today and this is with phone cameras watching. This abuse has been going unchecked forever. When American workers were fighting for rights, police were there to beat them. So to with civil right protesters,anti-war protesters. Police have more in common with right wing protestors than with liberal American’s . Progressive be it in America or Hong Kong or where ever police are always prepared to give someone a beating. I’ve wondered what kind of person is willing to beat a person or shoot them with no cause, surely no Christian. America is already a very millitaristic, gun carrying ,violent country with packed prisons .I’am for cutting military spending and INCREASING law enforcement spending, but really controling who becomes a cop . No veterans that served in combat.no special forces people they are to extreme by nature ,yearly mental screening and keeping in physical shape a strict requirement. All judgements against police paid from police pensions will help control abuse . It’s been Republican and Democrat projessives that made America great not regressives. Right wing extremism has and continues to be the greatest danger to America. If dividing a country is the best way of destroying it. Trump has sure helped Putin get his revenge. I hope his Moscow Trump tower is worth it.
Anthony, the police of your youth and neighbors are still the norm in law enforcement. They are willing to sacrifice their life to save yours, they still protect children, they still run toward trouble not away from it. Are there cops who do dumb and illegal stuff, yes, but it represents a fraction of one percent of the 750,000 police officers in the US. The reason you are seeing the bad examples in the news media is it is so rare. It is the unusual the makes the news.
I don’t know where you live but where I live the police officers patrolling the streets here are in good physical shape. I have occasionally watched the ‘Cops” show on TV and am amazed at the foot chases where a cop wearing a 15 or 20 pound gun belt can chase down a young guy through yards and over fences.
I am not going to address your left wing diatribe as it is unworthy of comment, and mostly wrong and short of reality.
I hope you are well with your physical handicap. I had paralytic polio when I was 14 and also had some bullying to deal with growing up. I didn’t like it but it made me strong.
Excellent articulation on a very serious situation, Marshall, and I wholeheartedly share your frustrations. Thank you for saying what so many of us feel.
“I know. Don’t hold your breath.” That’s how you ended your 2014 article? After Eric Garner was choked to death? And you also wrote: “You see where this is going, folks. And it’s not good. There will likely be more.” How many more since 2014? Floyd also was choked. The jogger was shot. Wasn’t a guy shot in the back, running away from a policeman who was probably going to take away his driver’s license?. Tamir Rice? The not so nice guy shot 7 times, with children in the car? Holder told of running across the street, because he was late, and being stopped by police. That SC black congressman who supports Trump said he has been pulled over 6? times, by DC police, when driving home. You’re still mad at Castro, now dead? Everyone there is literate, too, as well as having healthcare? The Communists rescued our astronauts from the Space station after the Challenger disaster.
Donald
It’s a shame that you are correct. The public seems to have developed an anti-police attitude, that is a disservice to the police and to the community. I’m not sure how this can be undone. Marshall, do you have any suggestions that might reverse this negative attitude toward the police?
