U.S. ATTORNEY GENERALS SHOULD BE ELECTED

This Op-Ed by yours truly appears in Florida Today newspaper.  Title speaks for itself:

Marshall Frank: US attorney generals should be elected

If President Bill Clinton had Eric Holder for attorney general in 1998, there would never have been an impeachment for committing perjury. Instead, America was treated to a fair investigation. Clinton had appointed a straight-laced attorney general named Janet Reno, probably the least political-minded AG in history.

I knew Reno as the state attorney in Dade County. She was so honest and self-dependent she wouldn’t even allow her employees to gas her car. She solicited no favors. It’s a mystery how she survived in a political world.

When the scandal broke about Clinton’s mendacity under oath, Reno knew being a member of Clinton’s cabinet would be a conflict because she would face expectations from her boss. Therefore, it was prudent to step aside and appoint a special prosecutor to handle the investigation.

Americans have not been privileged to that level of integrity today.

Eric Holder has spent a good part of his efforts in office dodging presidential scandals, some of which would absolutely justify appointing an independent prosecutor so that a neutral, nonpartisan investigation could be conducted. But Holder established his Department of Justice as the impenetrable wall around the president’s castle. Obama need not worry about scandals so long as Holder stood guard.

The nation’s president is not supposed to be above the law. In the past six years as president, Barack Obama has ostensibly violated numerous laws and procedures to further his agendas. Among them: Implementing the Dream Act by executive fiat; making recess appointments when the senate was in session; changing Obamacare laws on the fly without congressional action; authorizing military action in Libya without congressional approval; killing American citizens with drone strikes in other countries; disregarding illegal gun running by the Department of Justice in Fast & Furious; IRS selection of adversaries based on political leanings; negotiating releases of dangerous terrorists without consulting/informing Congress, and so on.

The magnitude of alleged violations are unprecedented for any president, including Richard Nixon, upon whose impeachable crimes were centered on a single case (Watergate). One only needs to Google “Impeachment Causes Obama” to find numerous pages of essays by journalists and political pundits, detailing reasons why Barack Obama should, at the least, be subject to a fair investigation by an independent authority. But that will not happen so long as his appointed attorney general acts as a partisan protector.

In November 2014, columnist Charles Krauthammer wrote that Obama’s use of executive orders violating immigration laws was an impeachable offense by itself. Krauthammer also pointed out that, regardless of allegations, impeaching Obama would be political suicide for the Republican Party in 2016.

Does this mean America now has a president who considers himself the head of two branches of government, not one? Will we have 21 months of quasi-dictatorship, i.e. legislation by executive fiat trumping the constitution and the responsibilities of Congress?

This should be a lesson learned about the political structure of our federal government in need of change. U.S. attorney generals should be elected, not appointed. That would instill more independence for the nation’s top law enforcer without being politically beholden to a chief executive. If there is any office that necessitates neutrality, it is the attorney general.

Attorney generals are elected in 45 state systems across the country. Only five are appointed by governors. Those who are elected can conduct independent probes of political corruption without regard for allegiances. Those who are appointed in the states are beholden to the governor. On the federal level, the AG is a devotee to the president. That needs to change.

Will it happen? Don’t hold your breath.

IS OBAMA A CHRISTIAN?

Is Barack Obama really a Christian?  Or did he portray himself as a Christian for political expediency?

From what we know about Obama’s history, it is clear that his political ambitions were rooted on or around the time he met Rev. Jeremiah Wright, pastor of the Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago ( or perhaps, earlier). Those of us who stay tuned to the political world, are fully aware that Jeremiah Wright’s sermonizing and ideology is based on American hatred, and his chummy relationship with the Jew-hating Nation of Islam. Obama not only sat in the pews of this church for 20 years, he was a powerful supportive figure aligning with Wright behind the scenes.

Would a Carter, Reagan, Clinton or Bush ever have been elected if they had a history of close associations with anti-Americans?

Perhaps Obama’s political advisors suggested he become a “Christian” as part of his future strategy?  Or maybe he linked up with Christianity on his own, we’ll probably never know.  But, for certain, by joining the Trinity Church, Obama could officially declare himself as a Christian, (whether true or not) thereby sucking millions of future voters into his political web. But, does anyone know of a bona fide Christian minister who would preach “God Damn America?”

Then again, would anyone who is a Christian, ever make a verbal error by stating to a news reporter, (George Stephanopoulos,) “my Muslim faith,” which had to be corrected by the reporter.  By any stretch of the imagination, would any non-muslim make such as slip? (See video link, below)

Nevertheless, besides verbally declaring his immersion into Christianity, has the president actually gone beyond words, with substantive action?

Nothing is more revealing than the present state of genocide against Christianity, world-wide, that has emerged since his rise to become the so-called leader of the free world. As fast as Obama had been at issuing condemnations when a white cop shoots a black person, or when anyone defames Islam or dares to suggest that Islam is associated with terror, that’s how slow he is in condemning, yet fighting, the radical Islamic war against Christians.

Liberal syndicated columnist, and frequent defender of Barack Obama, Kirsten Powers recently penned a critical column in USA Today and many other papers which questions Obama’s reasons for failing to stand up for the world-wide persecution of Christians, which has accelerated greatly during the his reign as President of the United States, while at the same time, radical Islam has become more dangerous and powerful than ever. I invite readers to check out her piece via this link:   Click here: Kirsten Powers: Christians thrown overboard left to drown by Obama

It may be the tip of the proverbial iceberg because the news media simply cannot report it all, and there is likely far more going on behind the scenes we’ll never know about.  Here’s the truth, as we know it so far:

  •  During the “Arab Spring” of 2011-12, which was strongly supported by the Obama administration, more than eighty Coptic (Christian) churches were burned/destroyed throughout Egypt and many thousands of Coptics were killed and/or displaced. The White House remained basically mute about these atrocities
  • Videoed beheadings and murders of Christian men in Libya and other places.
  • Christian children are being murdered and beheaded in Iraq.
  • A college was invaded by militants in Kenya, where 147 Christians were massacred for no other reason than being Christian, another 80 injured and 600 more who have been displaced.

This could be a very long article, yet we get the message. But, does the president?

We hear nothing from Barack Obama, yet any definitive responses that would come to the rescue of these Nazi-like horrors, where Christians are clearly being targeted for death, and to be made examples for the future of middle-east Christianity if people refuse to convert to Islam. Obama was quick to muster air assaults against Ghaddafi in Libya, to support the Muslim Brotherhood, but our president is conspicuously silent on Christian genocide.

This, by the way, is the crux of how Islam spread around the world so effectively between 632 A.D. and 711 A.D. Murder, terrorize, enslave, convert then keep the peace.

Meanwhile, desperate people have begged for help from the leader of the free world, to no avail.

The more the terrorists realize they are free to do as they wish, and that the free world is basically impotent, the more beholden they will become in their quest for establishing a caliphate where they want it…leaving lots of dead bodies behind.

Frankly, I don’t care if Obama is, or is not a Christian. I don’t judge people based on their religion or absence of it. What I do care about is the lie. For once we know it has been a lie, the next questions are:  1) What was the purpose of the lie? 2) What other matters of importance would he lie about? 3) Where does his true loyalties lie?

Imagine this. An American president utters a brief somber statement after an American journalist, James Foley, had just been hideously beheaded by Islamist militants for all the world to see and, within minutes, he’s back with the boys teeing off on the golf course.

Is Barack Obama a Christian?  What do you think?

MEET JORDAN SPIETH: AMERICA'S NEW SPORTS HERO

JordanSpietch
Meet America’s newest sports hero; Jordan Spieth, age 21. What a guy.  Keep your eye on this young man.  He’s only just begun.
If ever young people in America were in need of a worthy role model amid a myriad of loonies, druggies and narcissists, he’s finally come along.
No, he doesn’t play football or basketball, nor does he rap or scream into microphones with high-amped rock bands. Spieth is a pro golfer extraordinaire. After two years on the professional golf tour, this young man now sits as Number #2 in the world. The only phenom who compares, is Tiger Woods who, 19 years ago, won the Masters at age 21.
But wait. Spieth, the same age, just won the Masters tournament last weekend, setting records for lowest scores ever at the 36 hole and 54 hole marks, and tied Tiger Woods’ 19 year record for the lowest score ever at the Masters, beating Phil Mickelson and Justin Rose by four strokes each. His earnings for one tournament:  $1.8 million. And get this – one year ago in his first year on the tour in 2014, he placed 2nd in that Masters Tournament, losing only to Bubba Watson.
He’s already had five wins on the professional tour, including three this year.  Most pros would give their teeth to win even one pro tournament, and he’s only started.
Spieth was attending the University of Texas, but dropped out after 1.5 years to turn pro.  After all, he had already won two U.S. Amateur Tournaments, and the lucrative PGA awaited him, offering far more than an academic degree would ever pay him, especially at such a young age.  It wasn’t a bad decision. This year alone, his total winnings are nearly $5 million, and the season has just begun.
Besides being a model professional golfer, Spieth is one of the classiest young men to come along in a sport that is marinated with class.  When interviewed following his big win, his thoughts turned mostly to his 14 year-old sister with autism. Here are some of his comments:
“I miss her a lot. I wish she could have been here,” he told a CNN reporter.  “I can’t wait to get back to her and maybe let her try on the (green) jacket…she’s the most special part of our family.”
I like this guy. He is not only a fine athlete, he reeks of integrity. He reminds me of a term we once referred to well-grounded, moral and decent people: Clean-cut. It may be old-fashioned, but it’s still something to be appreciated.
Keep your eye on this guy. He’s going to be a positive role model for millions of young men and women down the road. A breath of fresh air.

POLICE SHOOTINGS: OP-ED IN FLORIDA TODAY

This Op-Ed article appears in the Sunday, April 12th edition of Florida today newspaper.  The editor is responsible for the title, though I’d have written something more specific like:  “Answering Questions About Police Shootings”

Frank: Most cops always do their jobs right

CONNECTTWEETLINKEDIN 1COMMENTEMAILMORE

From 1960, when I became a young Dade County officer, to the present time, the police profession has evolved across the nation. I witnessed the evolution in real time, from a segregated force, to one that employed all races, nationalities and gender.

In 1960, racial profiling was commonplace. That changed, not recently, but in the 1970s and ’80s. In today’s departments, the ban on profiling is powerful edict, addressed in all training, which prohibits anything that resembles profiling,

The labor pool of cops today has grown up in an integrated/assimilated world where most young people don’t see color. These youngsters are the police officers of 2015.

Police officers are thoroughly screened, tested, investigated and to the best of all abilities, psychologically evaluated for fitness to wear the badge and carry a deadly weapon. But not every test is foolproof.

Not every lawyer is honest, but they still practice. Not every doctor is competent, yet they remain licensed. Not every journalist is fair and impartial, though they are taught to be. And every so often, a bad cop slips through the cracks and abuses his power. But the cops generate headlines.

Because cops are routinely sent into volatile situations, they are more likely than average people to find themselves in crisis situations where they must react in split seconds to surprise attacks or employ critical measures that will be micro-analyzed by armchair judges later on. The average person doesn’t know that feeling. We should be praising our 800,000 police officers in America for getting it right 98 percent of the time, for they are the ones who risk not coming home at the end of work days — for you and me.

According to an amateur video, the recent shooting in North Charleston, South Carolina, was an abomination. People are right to feel outrage. But we can’t declare every white cop/black victim incident as an act of racism. Plenty of white cops have shot white suspects. Two days after the Ferguson, Missouri, shooting on Aug. 9, a black cop in Salt Lake City shot an unarmed white man. It barely received media notice.

Here’s some questions often asked, with the short answers:

•1. Why aren’t there more black police officers in places like Ferguson?

Answer: Because they are hard to recruit. The job is not that attractive to many young blacks because of social stigma and a desire to enter other professions. And, because an inordinate percentage of young blacks have backgrounds involving criminal behavior that automatically eliminate.

•2. Why don’t cops aim for legs or arms rather than shooting the body?

Answer: Because such practices usually causes a miss, or a wounding shot that does not incapacitate. All training, military and police, emphasize aiming for mass.

•3. Why don’t police agencies provide more sensitivity training?

Answer: Because they are already awash in sensitivity training.

•4. Why not have cameras on all police officers?

Answer: That’s probably going to happen soon. The upside: Cameras will provide evidence of good or bad policing. But it will also negate discretion for cops. I knew kids that don’t have arrest records today because a thoughtful cop kicked their butts for possessing a marijuana joint, instead of arresting them.

•5. Why are so many cops racists?

Answer: They’re not. Blacks are subject to a disproportionate number of police calls and/or attention, because they commit a disproportionate number of serious crimes. Police attention is more often directed to the black community by default. Consider, plenty of black officers have had their share of questionable incidents with white suspects, but get no national attention.

Each incident has its own unique dynamics. We must be careful not to feed into false narratives hammered into our psyche by race-baiters and sensation-seeking media.

Without police, the law would become meaningless, and the nation would collapse from anarchy.
